Students are responsible for all assignments even when legitimately absent and should not expect to be brought up to date during class as this results in a loss of instructional time for everyone. See your teacher for the appropriate time to make up missed work.  Assignments are expected on the due date. There may be penalties for work that is turned in late.

7 WEDNESDAY Meet in class then we pick up The Old Man and the Sea; Introductory notes and we begin reading in class. Meet in class first then pick up The Old Man and the Sea from the library-- YOU MUST BRING THE OLD MAN TO CLASS EVERY DAY-- (it counts as a HW grade). Also, be sure to take notes in your reading log for events for each of the five days you read about for possible notebook test!
8 THURSDAY Reading in class. HW--You must bring a #2 pencil for the Unit 2 Spelling and Vocabulary Test.

December 3 MONDAY Session 2b prewriting and handwritten essay  Due today at start of class-- If you do not have this in on time you will get a comment about possible Regents failure on your interim-- do not act surprised by this! Session 2b will be returned this week--  a score of 3 or below out of 6 indicates a chance of failing the regents exam. 

Notes on how to write an Introductory Paragraph and begin Session 2a of the Regents Exam Packet Due Monday December 10th. Update your class participation rubric for the past two weeks.

Pending availability, we will pick up Catcher in the Rye from the library and begin reading and a reading log this week--YOU MUST BRING Catcher in the Rye TO CLASS EVERY DAY-- (it counts as a HW grade). I will inform you in advance of our trip to the library so you may return your copy of The Old Man and the Sea.

5 WEDNESDAY View O Brother Where Art Thou? a retelling of the Odyssey in 1930's America.  As you view, due Friday, identify examples that might make this movie an example of Southern Gothic?  For extra credit, identify allusions to the Odyssey (HW 3.5.2 Check as done __).

7 FRIDAY View O Brother Where Art Thou?   Much of American Literature has to do with a journey.  Write a poem (any style but must use IMAGERY and must  NOT USE SLANG) about the lessons you  are learning on your personal journey just as both "Odysseus" from ninth grade English and "Ulysses Everett McGill" (from O Brother Where Art Thou? ) must also learn in their journeys.  Begin with an "invocation" for extra credit!  (HW 3.5.3 Check as done __) You  may describe the challenges you must overcome (yes, you may portray me as a monster) While your assignment doesn't have to be an EPIC it must be at least twenty lines in length. Read from “Complaints and Disorders” page 782 and describe in a few paragraphs the common belief about women as the weaker sex as revealed in this article… is it the same as in the 19th century?

Do you believe women are weaker?

If do explain why women shouldn’t have the vote and the 19th amendment should be repealed… If you do not explain why women are not eligible for a draft or certain combat roles equally with men—Shouldn’t all rights be equal with responsibility? If not explain your reasons. Due Tuesday with the questions below:

Read Building Background and write a speech to be delivered to the PTA and board of education about rules you would advise parents to enforce to prevent the disintegration of their family and how best to help a teenager succeed in school based on the following questions:     If grades were abolished, what effect would there be on student's education?  Would you, personally, allow others to read and study on their own or make it difficult for them to learn? Would others?  Should mandatory school attendance be abolished?  What would the effect be if students could choose not to stay home-- what would parents have to do about teens at home all day?  What items might be included in a progress report or report card?  31 MONDAY All five steps of Walt Whitman Poetry Assignment are due as well as a copy of your Wisdom in Reflection autobiography (remember you should give a copy to your guidance counselor for their record).  Copy Unit 6 Spelling and Vocabulary into notebook.   Write sentences that use the words correctly to show their meaning and turn in (if not done complete for HW-- 3 9 1).  HW-- Study five words per night all this week (new bonus-- for each word, look up both a synonym and antonym and place those on the other side of the cards [sentences no longer accepted for extra credit!]).
APRIL 1 TUESDAY Introduction to reading  Death of a Salesman (DOAS);  reading in class.  Keep a reading log for a notebook grade 3 9 2 and in preparation for a test at the end of the play.  Identify the particular kind of American Dream of each of the main characters as well as any delusions they might have.  Also, cite examples of themes motifs and symbols used in the play.
