DIRECTIONS: Of the concepts we have explored this year in the list below, select
one topic or statement to write a well developed essay (include the
handwritten rough draft)
according to the guidelines provided at the bottom of this page. All
essays must reference, but are not limited to, media we have seen this year.
For the highest grade possible, be sure to demonstrate your best knowledge and
employment of the English language…at a level deserving of graduation----
Your grade will be based on the following
guidelines* (10% each):

q Use a proper
heading and title indicate the topic number you’ve selected (name, date,
title, etc.)

q Use a well
developed introduction.

q Each of the
three (minimum) body paragraphs must begin with a
q
topic sentence.

q You must
identify and use media we have studied to support your points in each body
paragraph.

q You must
identify and use the various elements of news from our notes to support
your points in each body paragraph

q Use a well
developed conclusion.

q Include as many
specific examples and quotations as you are able to support your
points

q Turn in the
handwritten rough draft with the
q
final draft on the day due Monday, June 4, 2007

q The rough
draft should include evidence of correction, differing from the final
draft.

READ ALL THE GUIDELINES after you elect one of the following topics
for your essay:
- What do you make
of the dramatic changes occurring in the news business- the pressures for
profits in network news?
- As we have seen,
and contrary to popular belief, the courts have decided that it is not
against the law to outright lie on television news programs. Discuss the role
of news media in a democratic society.
- What do you make
of the dramatic changes occurring in the news business- the citizen journalism
movement?
- What is the new
definition of “what’s news” today?
- What is the
impact of the internet on traditional network news?
- What is the role
of Breaking News to
network news and evaluate its role in providing critical information?
- Identify and
discuss “Chicken Little Journalism” as it applies to broadcast journalism.
- Discuss the ways
Investigative Reports and Documentaries are evolving.
- What is the
effect of popular media (e.g. film, television, radio, and urban myth) on the
way news is presented?
- Discuss the
three methods of testing the validity of conspiracy theories studied in class
and their importance as evaluation tools for journalists.
