Students are responsible for all assignments even when legitimately absent and should not expect to be brought up to date during class as this results in a loss of instructional time for everyone. Accommodation for Special Education

6 Wednesday  Welcome Back!   We will review class rules and curriculum complete my "About You" questionnaire.   Homework: Complete the "Parent and Guardian Information Sheet," Course Outline, Notebook Requirements. Broadcast Journalism Club info.  What topics will we cover in class?   Supplies:   Each student needs a blank Mini DV tape.   (Available at Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, anywhere video tapes are sold.)   Label tape with your name.  This is what you will use to tape your productions this year.    Get one that is at least 60 minutes in length.

Copy "Work for the Week" into your notebook (Check as done r); Notes on setting Smart Goals; Create 3 Smart Goals for yourself (one for this quarter, one for the year, and one for after graduation) and explain how they are S.M.A.R.T. [Specific, Measurable, Action Oriented, Realistic, and Timely] (Check as done r)

Homework:   Watch an evening news program and use it as the basis for your evaluation for this week:  DUE FRIDAY.  For this first one, you should answer the question "How does this program effectively communicate the news?"

10 TUESDAY Quietly copy notes on the 12 basic advertising techniques into Vocabulary section of your note book for test on Friday.  During the course of this period go up to one of the four desks on the stage in the front of the room and run through your delivery (no rehearsal = no production).

Note*** Talking, distraction, and rudeness are not appropriate on a "set" or in a "studio" and will cause your grade to be lowered in both rehearsal and final production categories.

After you go, give me a copy of your rough draft and final draft following the editorial notes distributed Friday October 6th.(Production Days are limited and can not be "made up")

All students are to keep a class "editorial media log" identifying a minimum of 20 students, their editorial topic, and an example of an advertising technique or specific "call to action" (see editorial notes) used in the editorials being taped due Friday 13th.

16 MONDAY Copy work for week into notes-- Begin Documentary:   Shattered Glass      How important is it to be ETHICAL as a journalist?    Why?   Do you think that most journalists are ethical?  In your Media Log, due Friday, discuss the issue of ethics as shown in the film.   What are the causes and effects of the unethical conduct?

October 31 BOO! TUESDAY View a modern interpretation of War of the Worlds.  In your media log write a three paragraph (minimum) proposal describing in detail the elements you would have in place to create such a scare as the original Orson wells style broadcast.  And answer the following question-- What is the power behind such a story?  Due Monday 6th

1st quarter ends-- Grades will be mailed home-- Don't ask me as I every time you ask or e-mail I have to stop grading and it actually takes longer: besides, you can figure it out as easily as me-- after all you are required to keep all work in your notebook-- right? Average it out.  FYI-- as soon as I am done I will give the grades to guidance try here: but note, in the past we have been directed not to give grades out ahead of time.

SECOND QUARTER:

WEEK ONE  
6 MONDAY

“Chicken Little” journalism.   What is it? A style of Journalism that “alarms” the audience -- intended to get ratings (i.e. money) with minimal cost to the media it may cause panic, or at the very least, apathy.  Consider--   Coverage of the bird flu...terrorism...global warming…WMDs-- while these are “real” issues, the media can and does impact the way these “warnings” impact their audience.  

"Ostrich" Journalism:   quite the opposite.    Bury your head in the sand and repeat the same “Things are not that bad” message.  What are some issues that have been dealt with by the media in this way?  What is the effect of NOT covering a topic?

For your Media Log this week -- Media Log assignment due Thursday:  Compare Chicken Little Journalism to “Ostrich” Journalism in a Venn Diagram (provide at least one example from outside news sources for each-- cite the source). WEEK FIVE    **Interim Reports**  
4 MONDAY Nature Documentaries are always popular with audiences.  (This goes with one of the reports in your packet -- Check as done r)  ) Last year’s March of The Penguins  Director and writer Luc Jacquet and his French crew captured the whole spectacle while hunkering down for 13 months in Antarctica. They went without daylight, MTV or a single Big Mac.
"It's refreshing to see a film featuring animals where they don't talk and your kids can't get their likeness free with a Happy Meal. The 80-minute March of the Penguins is definitely more artsy than your typical 30-minute Discovery Channel wildlife vignette, complete with a musical score and excellent narration from Morgan Freeman."

With black humor, Moore illustrates the negative economic impact of General Motors CEO Roger Smith's summary action of closing several auto plants in Flint, Michigan, costing 40,000 people their jobs and economically devastating the city. How have things changed in the past 10 years due to cases like the one shown in Roger & Me?

Use the documentary to write an article on Corporate Responsibility.

17 WEDNESDAY End A Civil Action keep reporters notebook-- Begin Control Room Control Room documents the spectrum of opinion that surrounds the Qatar television news network Al Jazeera. Throughout the film, Donald Rumsfeld appears at press conferences, complaining about the propagandist nature of Al Jazeera. Paradoxically, another clip shows Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf himself accusing the television organization of transmitting American propaganda.  Recently the launching of Al Jazeera English  a 24-hour English-language news and current affairs TV channel headquartered in Doha, Qatar, the sister channel of Al Jazeera Arabic TV has caused a stir in the news.  As you view Control Room respond to their code of ethics HERE in your media log.  Answer the following question-- Is a free press possible during a war?  What changes might you make to their code of ethics?  Provide specific examples.  When you graduate from college would you work for Al Jazeera English and explain why or why not?

30   MONDAY Review NEW HW POLICY  all work that is not given a specific due date is due at the start of class the next day.   As you are aware, this quarter we study Media and The Internet as related to journalism view The Runaway Jury   In your Media Log keep a daily reporters notebook entry (3.1.1 Check as done r  Due Monday 5th)  You have been assigned to consider the problem of legal evidence as it relates to crime as well as voting.  Records produced by administrations world-wide are increasingly available in electronic form only, and are being made accessible through the networks. This development results in fundamental changes in records and archives management methods and necessitates new strategies for preserving the evidential value of records both for historical and legal use.  Research the problems of legal evidence --  you may focus on one aspect e.g. photography or voting machines  for a report you plan to broadcast.  Cite at least one source in your report.
