12 Monday Copy "Work for the Week" into your notebook; Copy notes on 8 Key concepts of media literacy.  Study the definitions for the eight key concepts of media literacy.   for a test Friday use index cards for 10 pt bonus.  HW- RD of Personal Mission Statement Due Tuesday.
13 Tuesday View "Merchant's of Cool" and identify "Mook" and "Midriff" as used in advertising to youth.  Respond in the Media section of your notebook to the concept that "the merchants of cool kill what they find."  Also, identify how each of the eight key concepts of media literacy  are represented in the report. If you miss it in class this time you may view it online (follow the link from my webpage) or go to the public library where it is your responsibility to arrange to view the materials.  (ALT:  research, on line, the ways advertisers market to children and discuss in an essay)--TURN IN RD of Personal Mission Statement.

Notes on creating a storyboard--  Project:  Create a storyboard for a "sales pitch" to the class.  Describe a healthy food you chose to advertise to the class and compare it with at least one other food.   The storyboard should be sufficient for a one minute minimum commercial.  Identify each time you use one of the 12 basic advertising techniques.

Working in class on storyboards:  They must include camera direction/ sound direction/ script/  and detailed timings for each new scene:  of course they must include at least five of the12 basic advertising techniques we have studied.  Due Friday 28th

October 31 BOO! MONDAY View end of Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein; as we have seen in Frankenstein and Young Frankenstein, the creature is brought into the world as part of the doctor’s dream or goal.

Imagine you are the creature (only created in the 1980’s and not the 1880’s)  write a formal letter to Dr. Frankenstein, your creator,  and tell him about what he should have done to help you succeed instead of leaving you on your own.  Due Wednesday.

1) What is the difference between a Replicant and a Human?

2) Why is it so important to Decker to point out he has "never killed" anybody?

Each Student must have a separate three ring English notebook with the following sections organized to allow you (and them) to easily follow our progress:
A “Work for the Week” curriculum section— on the first day of every week I post the work for that week detailing a daily summary of class work and homework you can review.
A Spelling and Vocabulary Section—includes spelling and vocabulary designed to prepare the student for standardized tests (SAT, ASVAB, ATC, etc.) as well as college preparation.
A literature or media section—includes notes and criticism of literature and texts we study as part of our class.
A Test and Quiz Section—includes review material, and a record of all tests and quizzes.
A Grammar and Composition Section—this section has to do with your child’s ability to write correctly and with style (the key currency of the universities as well as Regent’s Exams).

30   MONDAY Turn in Red Dawn assignment.  This quarter we study the future of media.  By exploring the evolution of "Utopia" through media we gain an understanding of where society is today and thus where media is likely to go in the near future.  As we view these two episodes  rewrite the Lone Ranger's Creed (Here) for a modern hero due Friday--  "Enter The Lone Ranger" September 15, 1949  Episode # 1
31   TUESDAY "War Horse" October 20, 1949  Episode # 6  Begin Little Big Man In your notebook try to identify as many examples of the American Dream and  "The American Indian Dream" as you can find in Little Big Man (a satirical look at the American Dream).  Then compare and contrast, in a Venn Diagram, the "Indians" of the Lone Ranger with the "Indians" of Little Big Man  due Monday.

27 MONDAY Venn Diagram about "nothing" is due.  In film and popular media, the fears of the society for which they are intended reveal popular concerns.  By looking at "dystopia" (the negative version of a utopia) we can understand the desire and fear of the audience.  As we begin Rollerball,  consider the world of 2018 as a global corporate state, containing entities such as the Energy Corporation, a global energy monopoly based in Houston which deals with nominally-peer corporations controlling access to all Transport, Luxury, Housing and Food on a global basis.  In what ways might this vision of dystopia be valid today?  Consider each of the following in a five paragraph minimum essay due next Monday: the globalization of the economy, limits of corporate greed, news violence and "reality" TV, destruction of social security and pensions, and the role of the individual vs. the crowd.

For your fourth quarter branding project you are going to “brand yourself” with all associated media in the project rated “G” for subject matter, language, and content.  This project is worth 20% of your grade for this quarter DUE at start of class FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2006.  Each day late results in the drop of a full letter grade on the project: DO NOT PLACE WORK IN MY MAILBOX.

Begin  The Corporation a film that explores the nature and spectacular rise of the dominant institution of our time. Footage from pop culture, advertising, TV news, and corporate propaganda, illuminates the corporation's grip on our lives. Taking its legal status as a "person" to its logical conclusion, the film puts the corporation on the psychiatrist's couch to ask "What kind of person is it?"
